Start with the dandelions
4.12.2008
Lately I've been pouring over gardening books. Inspired by color, fragrance (pondering planting both lilacs & a magnolia tree in the back), dirt, and potential composting (can I really do it?). Last weekend I spent the entire day in the sun pruning a shrub that hadn't been pruned in probably 10 years. Afterward I looked as though a cat had attacked me with scratches running up and down my arms. The love of long sleeved shirts will be dear this summer as I have many more shrubs to prune. I think the hard part (as usual with any science + creative endeavor) is taking the leap from book learning to actually completing the task. I have read at least nine gardening for beginners books and have browsed several gardening magazines. Yet as I stand at the edge of actually paying and planting, I am afraid I don't know enough. Oh how those nasty little creative stoppers can interfere with not only painting, photography, and writing but gardening too! Here I go. . . I guess I can start with the dandelions before suggesting to Ben that at least half our tax return go toward buying trees. I love trees.
